My client was triggered the other day, and it almost ruined his meeting.
Fortunately, he used a simple tool I teach. He responded, got back in control.
He said, “It changed everything. I now know I can be more in control of my emotions.”
What is a negative trigger? It is something that causes you to change your behavior.
It creates an upset; it makes you feel angry, frustrated, out of control.
The person who “triggered” you didn’t create the trigger; they just activated it.
The trigger was created in the past. Your response is conditioned, automatic, a habit.
Decide to free yourself from negative triggers. To do so, you must be conscious and aware.
To react (negative) – is a HABIT – it is unconscious; automatic.
To respond (positive) – is EMPOWERING – it is learned, a discipline you create.
Use PBS – Pause, Breathe and Smile when you are triggered – to be in control.
Pause – to interrupt the automatic reaction to the trigger.
Breathe – to calm yourself down so you can think clearly.
Smile – to break the negative feeling; smiling instantly makes you feel better.
PBS is the interrupter. Use Pause, Breathe and Smile when something upsetting happens.
For example, you hear bad news at a meeting, someone says something unkind.
Stop as soon as you feel upset and Pause, Breathe and Smile.
NEXT: PRACTICE POWERFUL SELF-TALK – to get your power back. Try these statements:
“It’s all okay.” “Everything is working for me.” “I can handle this.”
“I am powerful.” “I am calming down.” “I can choose peace in this situation.”
This is THE most popular tool I teach.
It helps leaders and their teams respond (calm, powerful) vs. react (powerless).
Use PBS – Pause, Breathe and Smile – and get your power back.
