Break Through Your Mental Blocks

Do you often wonder how you could be more effective at home or work?

Two words for you: Get creative.

This morning, I was thinking about how to make better use of my time and get more done. I immediately remembered a tool called the “The 20 Idea Method” – and here’s how it works.

Adapted from Earl Nightingale, this could be considered “solo brainstorming.” It is particularly effective when you are “stuck” and need creative solutions to your challenge. Try it for a few days in a row, and you will be astounded by the creative solutions you receive.

In three easy steps, here’s how it works:

  1. Write your challenge as a question at the top of the page:

“How can I get more done today?”

  1. Write 20 answers; just keep writing until you have 20 ideas:

“Set a time deadline for each task.”

“Come in 15 minutes earlier than usual to get a head start.”

Set a timer (10 minutes at a time) to keep me focused and on task.”

  1. When finished, circle one answer and act right away. This is the “magic” of the formula.

You must TAKE ACTION on one of the ideas right away.

Some points to remember:

  1. Answers will come quickly at first; then, more slowly. It’s okay – it’s part of the process.

  2. Do not “edit” or judge your ideas. Write down everything that comes to mind.

  3. This practice will get easier as you use it more often. Start with your greatest challenge.

So, get creative. Try “The 20 Idea Method” and see what happens for you.
