Cut Yourself a Break

I was singing – what a feeling!

She – my critical voice - was finally off my back.

And I realized what set me free.

It is simple. I decided to cut myself a break. You can too.

First, notice the critical voice in your head – the one that makes you feel down, negative.

Know that voice is not “you.”

The voice is your habitual thinking – you think roughly 60,000 thoughts/day, many are repetitive and negative.

Then, commit to a better habit – one that is kinder, easier to live with – that makes you feel good.

Use NBC to cut yourself a break:

- Notice the voice that says, “your life is not working.” Hint: you will feel lousy.

- Break the pattern with, “Cancel, cancel.” Delete the negative thought that does not support you.

- Change the thought to an affirmation – a personal, positive, present tense (feel better) thought.

“I can handle this today,” is personal (I) positive (can) handle this (present tense). It works.

Why do affirmations work?

They switch your focus from what you don’t want (life not working) to what you do want (“My life works”).

Why does it feel so “weird” to say an affirmation?

Because 90% of your 60,000 thoughts/day are repetitive. It feels weird to change, even if it benefits you.

What is the catch?

Affirmations work by re-wiring your brain. As you repeat “better” thoughts you cancel out old patterns.

To work, you must use them frequently. Want to feel better? Set a goal to use affirmations every day.

This takes practice – and is so worth it as you start to feel better, make better choices, get great results.

Choose one right now – write it on a card, place it on your computer or bathroom mirror, and say it all day:

“Today is going to be a great day.” “Everything can work for me.” “I can handle this.”

“I am happy.” “I can turn this around.” “I can figure this out.”

“I can feel wonderful today.” “This meeting is going to go well.” “I am doing okay today.”

This is how you encourage yourself. You change the critical voice – to optimism, kindness, and compassion.

In this moment, you can handle whatever is in front of you. (“I know I can handle this.”)

Know that you are powerful, deserve better and can be happier and more successful. (“I am powerful.”)

Use NBCNotice the voice, Break the pattern (“cancel, cancel”) , and Change the thought (“I feel good.”)

This is the way you cut yourself a break.
